The GRCF offers Nucleic Acid Isolation and Storage services
DNA Isolation
DNA Isolation
Prices range from $35 to $70 per sample, depending on sample type. Volume pricing is available for large projects. We produce high molecular weight DNA suitable for archiving, PCR, Southern blotting, and NGS library construction. Sample normalization and plating services are also available.
RNA Isolation
RNA Isolation
Isolation can be done from PAXgene blood collection tubes, tissues (fresh or RNAlater preserved), cultured cells, FFPE samples and plasma samples. The RNA we produce is suitable for downstream applications such as cDNA synthesis, qPCR, dPCR, Northern blots and RNAseq library construction.
FFPE Isolation
FFPE Isolation
We offer both DNA & RNA isolation from FFPE samples. This sample type provides an invaluable resource for genetic studies where DNA or RNA are not available from fresh or frozen tissues, but, nucleic acids purified from these sources can be difficult to work with because they are often highly cross-linked, degraded and fragmented.
How do I get started?
If you have a routine request and are familiar with our services, place an order at any time in iLab.
If you would like to consult with us about your project, please email us to set up a time.

FAQs
What will I receive?
All sample types receive an Excel worksheet with nanodrop quantification results uploaded to their iLab request when the order is complete.
DNA:
- High Molecular Weight DNA in individual tubes
- A260 and A260/A280 values determined by Nanodrop analysis.
- A spreadsheet that includes concentration measured at A260, the A260/A280 ratio, hydration volume and total yield of DNA for each sample.
- Qualitative analysis is available using our Fragment Analyzer for an additional fee.
RNA:
- Individual tubes of RNA
- Primary quantitative analysis via Nanodrop.
- Qualitative analysis is available using our Fragment Analyzer for an additional fee. This analysis determines an RQN (RNA Quality Number) on a scale from 1 to 10.
- DV200 analysis for RNA FFPE samples is also available using the Fragment Analyzer.
What type of samples do you extract from?
DNA
- We have experience with a wide variety of sample types ranging from blood, FFPE and tissue to stool, soil and seal blubber.
RNA
- We have protocols for PAXgene blood collection tubes, fresh or RNAlater preserved tissue, cultured cells, plasma and FFPE samples.
- Need something else? Please contact us!
I have FFPE samples. What other information should I know?
- We can work with FFPE blocks, core punches, curls/scrolls and slides
- Nucleic Acids purified from FFPE tissues can be difficult because they are often highly cross-linked, degraded and fragmented
- Nucleic Acids purified from FFPE may not be suitable for all downstream applications
- The nucleic acid quality and integrity are often affected by duration of tissue fixation, age, and storage condition of the tissue blocks, as well as the extraction method.
- We use Covaris kits for isolation, which includes Adaptive Focused (AFA) technology.
Are you able to extract DNA & RNA from the same sample?
Yes!
We use AllPrep DNA/RNA/miRNA Universal Kit from QIAgen. This kit is designed to purify genomic DNA and total RNA, including miRNA, simultaneously from a single biological sample. Since there is no need to divide the sample into two for separate purification procedures, maximum yields of DNA and RNA/miRNA can be achieved.
Genomic DNA purified with the AllPrep DNA/RNA/miRNA Universal Kit procedure has an average length of 15–30 kb, depending on sample collection and storage conditions, and all RNA molecules that are >18 nucleotides are easily isolated.
Pricing
Pricing varies by sample type and required services.
DNA isolation ranges from $30/sample for small cell pellets to $70/sample for FFPE. Most sample types are in the $40-$50/sample range. Specialized sample types (like environmental samples) which require a specialized extraction protocol will be higher per sample and may include the cost of the specialized kit.
RNA isolation ranges from $35/sample for tRNA & miRNA isolation from cultured cells, to $85/sample for FFPE. Most sample types are in the $40-$50/sample range.
DNA + RNA extraction is $58/sample from standard samples and $110/sample from FFPE samples.
Exact pricing will be visible within iLab when placing an order. If you would like quote specific to your project, please contact Roxann Ashworth.
